Woven Crochet - Everything Old is New Again?

Wovencrochetbeige Dscf1204

About 15 years ago I made this jacket/coat with yarn that remained from my store in Toronto.  The base is crocheted and I used a very fine wool.  The idea, though is to purposely leave large holes which are later filled with other yarns when they are woven in.  This technique was something that I had never seen before, although after I finished it, I did discover several books which had little blurbs about it.

I'm thinking I need to revisit this technique.  It allows real freedom with use of yarns and different gauges - the only thing that matters is that the holes are filled so that the yarn doesn't slip out.  Sort of like painting with yarn.

The bottom picture is of another garment I made using the same technique at around the same time.  A coat and matching vest.  Both haven't been worn in a very long time.Wovencrochetblack

Crocheted Math

Crochet If you haven't yet seen the article in "Crochet Fantasy" (which I'll admit is not exactly at the top of my purchase list either), about Daina Taimina and her work with crochet and math, you should get the magazine.  It is fascinating.  This is a picture directly from the article, and the picture below is my own adaptation.  How many times have I made a scarf using the same principles, and wondered why it works that way .........  This article makes some kind of sense out of all of that.  Turns out, it is actually a mathematical model (and you thought you weren't that good in math!)

Dscf4134I was so fascinated that I took some stash remnants and began my own little model, just to get the feel of it again.   Love it.   Love it.  Love it.
