So ... tired...

Hm. It figures. We finally get C to start sleeping through the night, and I am more tired than ever. My body is catching up for the last 9 1/2 months, I guess. I always swore I would never do the Ferber thing, but we realized that now is probably the best time to do it - before he can stand in his crib and cry out, "Mom-my!!" He went from sleeping for 5 hours at a time, TOPS, to 12 hours. However, naps are still a struggle. I have been driving myself crazy trying to get him to nap in the afternoon. It's so ridiculous how worked up I get over a nap. So, it's time to put a time limit on it, and if it's not happening, just take him out of his crib and that's that.

On the knitting front, I finished a present for Angela that I can't show or talk about incase she reads this. Now I am working on a sweater in Rowan Ribbon Twist that has been in my stash for about 2 years. I am so excited that I am a) working with a yarn from my stash, and b) going to finish it soon because it's about 9 stitches/4". The flipside, of course, is that my wrist isn't so happy with this project.

Going to sleep now. Good night!

Baby boy...and a t-shirt

Dscf0372a I don't feel like writing much in my posts these days. I am just not as witty as others, and besides, I need to save whatever wit I do have for my wedding speech next week!

Here's a t-shirt I cut and sewed, using the #70 audrey style from 99 Ways to Cut, sew, trim & tie your t-shirt into something special. Thanks, Mandy- you are my inspiration! And a couple baby photos as well - the most adorable boy I know.

Showered

Marcia and Lynda held the most beautiful shower for Emily on Saturday.  The party was great fun - terrific food, everyone enjoyed themselves, and it was wonderful to have most of my friends in one place for such a special event.  Several people were unable to attend, the most missed by me, was of course Belinda who would have really enjoyed the fun.

Here are some pics to enjoy.Webbeautifulbridedscf5211

Boxes and Baby

I'm not in much of a writing mood, but I'll tell you this - I am now Auntie Bel! I can't wait to spoil my nephew with handknits. :)

Here are the boxes I made for our midwives (3 months late, but hey, I have a 3 month old baby!). They are from Mason-Dixon Knitting. I love the colours and wanted to keep them for myself. Isn't that always the way! And I've also included the cutest picture of C that I have ever seen.

Mandy's visit!

So, this post is a bit overdue! Mandy was in town for a visit - she came to our house for dinner and then we went to Make One for some knitting, chatting and baby holding. Here are some photos from the visit, and at the bottom is C doing his latest stunt:

Ma's Visit

Update on C... he is smiling already, and not even 6 weeks old yet!!! He also slept for 6 hours the past 3 nights, but not tonight, alas! Most importantly, he is one big bundle of joy. Ma came to town for 10 days to help me ease into not having dh at home (which he was for a month - how amazing is that!?), and we had a great time! Here are some pics from the visit. Check out my beautiful mother wearing her new birthday/Mother's Day scarf (which I made about a week before C was born) from Loop-d-Loop by Teva Durham.

OUR PASSOVER INTERNET SEDER

Last night, following in the tradition of our parents, grandparents and forefathers, we had the second of two passover seders. As any woman can tell you who has prepared one of these events – you must be a caterer, shopper, event planner, furniture mover, dishwasher, choirmaster and photographer. This year we had to find a solution to a very serious problem. Our son who attends McGill in Montreal had an exam and couldn’t join us. Our daughter Bel, her husband and their children also couldn’t join us because C is just 2 weeks old. We had to find a way to make them a part of the seder, and I suggested using our webcam. My husband Stan loved the idea, but because he isn’t exactly computer savvy, and I am the resident computer guru (not hard when there are only two of you), I had to add this to my other duties.

After a full week of cooking, cleaning and preparing, it all came together. But it certainly looked iffy an hour before the service began. We asked everyone to be at our house by 6pm. -my two brothers and their families along with my oldest son and his fiancé.

The problem was that everyone was coming from Toronto. They all left on time, but as luck would have it, traffic this night was different from all other nights. Each of them called to tell us they would be at least an hour late, and in fact we didn’t get started until close to 8pm. You can imagine what that does to the timing of a meal.

The second problem was that an hour before the appointed time, I was unable to connect to both of my children at the same time on the internet. I tried everything, but the signal was not good and I became very frustrated. Add to that, the fact that every five minutes, one of the families travelling in from Toronto called to say that they would be late…. very late in fact….. and I was wondering why on earth I had put in so much effort. Stan and I thought of sitting ourselves down at either end of the seder table and taking a picture to show the seder where no one came.

Someone was looking out for us though. At about 6:30pm I decided to try the connections again for the internet and it worked. I was very surprised because I had had so much trouble earlier, but pleased. We all chatted a bit and I kept going over to the ovens and turning the heat down lower.

By 7:15 our Bob and Rana and the girls arrived at the same time as my brother-in-law Howie, followed very quickly by James and Emily. Tom called to say he had taken a wrong turn and was now in Hamilton! We were so late already that it really didn’t matter. By the time we all sat down to the table it was well past 8pm. It was so wonderful to see everyone together.

All the women lit the candlesticks in front of them and said the bracha (blessing). Nathan in Montreal said the Kiddush (blessing over the wine) and we had 3 renditions of the 4 questions. The first was my nephew J, who was the youngest at the seder. The second was O and Z. The third was the newest soon-to-be member of our family, Emily, who has been teaching herself to read Hebrew. Awesome. This made the whole experience worthwhile.

We sang and enjoyed each other’s company until quite late. It was a wonderful evening. Throughout the seder, the kids in Calgary and Nathan in Montreal were there watching and participating or talking to us. I’m sure from their end it wasn’t as much fun, but from our point of view it helped us feel that the whole family was together on one of our most important holidays. When your family cannot all be there, this is definitely an option worth considering.

Birth

Dscf9746a C was born at home on March 25 and weighed 9 lbs 4 oz! I am so happy with how everything went - this was a planned homebirth, with midwives and a doula, and a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) to boot, so I am really proud to say - I DID IT! I gave birth to him in a kiddie pool (one I am sure O & Z will enjoy this summer) which I didn't imagine would happen, but I am glad it did- I think it probably made for an easier (less painful) birth. This was my first time experiencing labour (I had a scheduled C-section with the twins) and although it wasn't "fun", it's what I wanted, and also wasn't as long as I thought it would be. Pushing C out was much different than I pictured - less painful, but more work.

While I was pregnant, I kept thinking, "If I can give birth, I can do anything". It's amazing how quickly those little gremlins in my mind creep back in to remind me that I can't do something, or how hard it will be, or that I should start worrying about it now so that I can't enjoy the present moment. But I will enjoy C, because I know how fast these baby moments go (where did the last 4 and a half years of O and Z's lives go?!).
